Huawei CFO returns to court for final weeks of extradition proceeding

Huawei CFO returns to court for final weeks of extradition proceeding

Leon Li 2021-08-05 10:40:34
Meng Wanzhou, chief financial officer of Huawei Technologies Co, returned to British Columbia Supreme Court in Vancouver on Wednesday to fight in the final weeks of an extradition proceeding that would send her to the US.

This week's hearing will focus on the arguments that the US misled Canada by omitting key details from the record of the case provided to the court to justify Meng's extradition.

Defense lawyer Mona Duckett told the court Wednesday that the US was "selective" in what it disclosed to Canada in its extradition request.

Meng's lawyers have claimed her rights were breached in three distinct ways in previous hearings: political interference by former US president Donald Trump; conspiracy between Canadian and US authorities to share protected information; and lack of international jurisdiction by the US to prosecute a Chinese citizen for actions in Hong Kong. Meng and Huawei have denied all accusations that she put HSBC at risk of violating US sanctions against Iran.
