South China prepares for Typhoon Kalmaegi
Chinese weather forecasters have issued their second highest alert for Typhoon Kalmaegi, which is expected to make landfall between Yangjiang in Guangdong Province and Wanning in Hainan Province on Tuesday afternoon.
The typhoon is expected to bring strong winds and rainstorms to southern Guangdong and Hainan. Heavy downpours are forecast in coastal areas in South China Sea in the coming three days, with more than 500 millimetres of rain in some areas of Guangdong, Guangxi and Hainan.
All shipping service in Qiongzhou Strait is suspended. Primary and middle schools in Haikou will be closed for the day, and the city has dispatched teams to reinforce houses and check power transmission stations.
